Welcome to my first CHEI Blog in which I will discuss issues related to the management of Hospitality Programs from a Dean’s perspective. Firstly, a little about my background. I started my career in the Hospitality Industry in the early 1990’s on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. For the next almost 15 years I worked in many different sectors of the hospitality and tourism industries from hotels to theme parks, event companies to travel agencies, as well as a tourism promotion firm. Many of these roles were in middle to senior management positions. In 2006 I decided to take a different path and undertook my PhD studies. Over the last 15 years I have held many academic roles including Associate Dean, Deputy Dean, and Dean positions in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore. I am currently Dean at Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai, UAE. I have spent a lot of time in China, working with academic partners and now working with the fantastic team at CHEI, and always love visiting your beautiful country.

Enough about me and more about how we can improve the programs that we deliver to our students. There are several important ways academics and administrators can implement change to ensure the programs we deliver meet the needs of our students as well as the needs of our industry partners. I will talk about all of these over the next few blogs. The area I would like to focus this blog on is our relationship with our industry partners. Having a strong working relationship with industry is the key to ensuring that our curriculum is relevant to the rapidly changing needs of the hospitality and tourism industry. The relationship between industry and academia is generally fragmented with academic institutions blaming industry for lack of engagement and industry claiming that academia is not meeting their needs. Therefore, the first step to ensure a strong working relationship with industry is to implement an Industry Advisory Board. The main focus of this board is to ensure that the institution is up to date with current industry trends allowing the institution to develop curriculum that meets the needs of industry to ensure that graduates are employable.

This board will have several key goals such as those listed below:

promote closer academic/industry collaboration in developing educational programs;

b

promote collaborative research activities between the institution and industry;

c

assure the industry relevance of the curriculum of all programmes of study;

determine the criteria for the selection of internship placement and students first destination employment; and

promote the funding of scholarships, awards and bursaries for the benefit of students.

In my view the industry advisory board should consist of members from a wide range of hospitality sectors (e.g., hotels, restaurants, event companies, theme parks, cruise ship, tourism marketing boards, etc.). The board should also be gender balanced to ensure representativeness from the industry. Members should also come from a variety of roles within industry such as human resources, marketing, finance, general managers, CEOs, front office managers, food and beverage managers, etc. Having members from a variety of industries and roles will ensure that trends related to all aspects of the industry will be considered. One mistake many institutions make is filling the board with a homogenous group such as all CEOs and general managers. What tends to happen with these homogenous groups is that they tend to be quite narrow in perspective, whilst most of these very senior industry figures also do not work directly with our students or graduates. So my advice when putting an Industry Advisory Board together is to approach those industry professionals that directly recruit and work with your students and graduates.

It is not always easy to approach industry to try to get members of the advisory board. The place I always start is with my alumni who are now in senior positions in industry. Alumni are mostly happy to come back to their institution and provide assistance wherever possible. You can also ask your alumni to recommend others who they think would be good on the advisory board. You will also have hotels that you work with for student placements; approach the Human Resource managers in these partner hotels to also be part of the board.
